EFL Students' Motivation in Writing, Writing Proficiency, and Gender
Students are frequently less motivated in doing productive skills such as Speaking and Writing because it needs combination of micro and macro skills. However, writing become the most complicated one since its complexity and students become lazy to write in a required amount. We cannot deny that writing needs persistence and strong motivation. Thus the researchers conduct this correlational study to find out the relationship between students’ motivation in writing and their proficiency (score) across gender (male and female)
The research was conducted involving 55 students who are taking an Essay Writing course at an English Department in Indonesia. The students were from two classes, 28 from Class A and 27 students from Class B. they were required to write one essay out of five choices (exemplification, comparison and contrast, classification, process analysis, and cause effect). Their writing would be assessed using certain scoring rubric which has been validated before. While for the motivation, they have to fill out a questionnaire that the researchers created.
This study revealed that there was a significant correlation between EFL students’ motivation in writing and their writing proficiency. Moreover, female students found to have higher motivation in writing.
